Variation and Semantic Relation Interpretation: Linguistic and Processing Issues
نویسندگان
چکیده
Studies in linguistics define lexico-syntactic patterns to characterize the linguistic utterances that can be interpreted with semantic relations. Because patterns are assumed to reflect linguistic regularities that have a stable interpretation, several software implement such patterns to extract semantic relations from text. Nevertheless, a thorough analysis of pattern occurrences in various corpora proved that variation may affect their interpretation. In this paper, we report the linguistic variations that impact relation interpretation in language, and may lead to errors in relation extraction systems. We analyze several features of state-of-the-art pattern-based relation extraction tools, mostly how patterns are represented and matched with text, and discuss their role in the tool ability to manage variation. Processing and Normalizing Hashtags
We present ongoing work in linguistic processing of hashtags in Twitter text, with the goal of supplying normalized hashtag content to be used in more complex natural language processing (NLP) tasks. Hashtags represent collectively shared topic designators with considerable surface variation that can hamper semantic interpretation. Our normalization scripts allow for the lexical consolidation a...
متن کاملSemantic Processing Ability in Persian-Speaking Alzheimer’s Patients
Objectives: This paper aims to explore whether the Persian-speaking patients of different stages, ranging from mild to moderate, have a deficit in semantic processing by comparing the performance of Alzheimer’s patients with that of the healthy individuals. Methods: The subjects of both the groups of Alzheimer’s patients and healthy control were matched for age, the state of monoli...
متن کاملDynamic Categorization of Semantics of Fashion Language: A Memetic Approach
Categories are not invariant. This paper attempts to explore the dynamic nature of semantic category, in particular, that of fashion language, based on the cognitive theory of Dawkins’ memetics, a new theory of cultural evolution. Semantic attributes of linguistic memes decrease or proliferate in replication and spreading, which involves a dynamic development of semantic category. More specific...
متن کاملMigration, Ethnocentrism and Linguistic Diversity Effect in the Development of the Takestan city
Migration is among important issues that less developed and developing countries have confirmed during the recent five decades. This issues in Iran has attraced a lot of researcher and planner views. Irregular and increasing migrations have created a lot of consequences for cities and the target settlements, social effects of migration on the cities is among such consequence these, in this proj...
متن کاملParametric effects of syntactic-semantic conflict in Broca's area during sentence processing.
The hypothesized role of Broca's area in sentence processing ranges from domain-general executive function to domain-specific computation that is specific to certain syntactic structures. We examined this issue by manipulating syntactic structure and conflict between syntactic and semantic cues in a sentence processing task. Functional neuroimaging revealed that activation within several Broca'...
